Mathematics

In grades K-4, we implement the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum in both English and Spanish, which builds foundational math skills while fostering a collaborative learning environment. This curriculum is specifically designed around student discourse to spark meaningful discussions and develop strong reasoning skills. This approach encourages students to discuss and write about mathematical concepts, listen to peers' perspectives, explain their thinking, and respectfully evaluate others' ideas—all of which deepens their mathematical understanding. Students receive at least 60 minutes of daily math instruction in grades K-2, increasing to 90 minutes in 3rd and 4th grade.

Our hands-on approach incorporates physical manipulatives that help students grasp mathematical foundations while developing critical thinking through problem-solving activities. Beyond classroom instruction, BES provides specialized support through dedicated math interventionists who offer remediation when needed. Students needing additional challenges can also work with our PEAK teacher during portions of the math block for enrichment opportunities and extended learning experiences.
